Nearly $300 million dollars in unclaimed funds are owed to Westchester County residents, businesses and organizations.
More than $278 million of the state's $15 billion in unclaimed funds has been returned to New Yorkers this year, according to New York Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.
DiNapoli joined County Executive George Latimer at the White Plains Library on Thursday afternoon to help residents find out if unclaimed funds are owed to them.
Latimer announced county government even discovered $20,000 that is could reclaim from the state.
Most of the unclaimed money originates from closed bank accounts, court funds, dividends, utilities and insurance payments.
Latimer said: “Here in Westchester County, the County government itself did a search. We have a budget gap that we’re trying to close, and we found money. We are happy that we were successful, and we want all of you to be successful, too.”
DiNapoli said: “It’s still a tough economy for many people in our state. So whatever money you can get back from this program, it’s found money. It helps you pay your bills. Maybe it lets you do something special that you wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise.”
Representatives from DiNapoli’s office stayed at the public library's Community Room at 100 Martine Ave. to help local residents search for any of the money owed to them.
